Within the context of integrated interventions for urban regeneration aiming to enhance the attractiveness of urban areas, TREK has been appointed to deliver an Operational Plan for the Integrated Urban Development of the Municipality of Igoumenitsa, in Epirus region of Greece. The plan aims towards a holistic and integrated approach of Spatial Planning for the city, comprising both the human and infrastructure elements.
Igoumenitsa is the capital of Thesprotia Prefecture, based in the west coast (Ionian - Adriatic Sea) of Epirus Region, Northwestern Greece. It is a typical suburban city with structural economic and social problems. Its cultural and natural heritage however could be proved as the leading edge for its regeneration.
Outcome of the project is a set of practical and feasible actions aiming at the protection and sustainable development of natural and built environment, economic prosperity, improvement of quality of life, regeneration of highly degraded neighborhoods, and social inclusion in a selected area of intervention. Special citation will be given to the promotion of the city's cultural heritage and its particular identity. Indicative actions to be included in the Integrated Urban Development Plan are the following:
. Creation and maintenance of public spaces of high quality
. Modernization of infrastructure networks
. Improvement of energy efficiency
. Fostering innovation and entrepreneurship
. Sustainable improvement of natural and built environment
. Enhancement of local economy and local labor market
. Promotion of effective vocational and educational policies, especially for children and young people
. Promotion of efficient and accessible urban transportation systems
. Safeguarding social cohesion.
Project duration is 6 months with project promoter the Region of Epirus, Greece.
