Energy efficiency in Public Transport Systems in Metropolitan Thessaloniki

Following tender procedure issued by the Region of Central Macedonia, TREK to assess the existing Public Transport System in the Metropolitan area of Thessaloniki, the capital of Central Macedonia, in terms of utilization, scope and especially under the energy efficiency and carbon footprint view. Following, to address the renovation of Public transport fleet and to tackle new and innovative Transport infrastructure, especially those of rail transport. Budgeting, scope of work as well as financial structuring of the Transport Infrastructure supplements the Technical Advisory work of TREK.

Metropolitan Thessaloniki area of some 1.500.000 inhabitants, with neighboring Chalkidiki and other close seaside tourism destinations, request a transport load of 1-2,5 million travellers and commuters, depending on seasonality. City transport, as well as suburban transport means are suffering from inadequate and heavilty polluting mass transportation systems, whilst traffic is among the main issues in the city’s well being and resilience. Smart, innovative and eco-friendly transport means need to be deployed for the million+ of commuters and the couple of million tourists visiting the area, especially in the summer time.

TREK has been appointed to address these issues, especially from the point of view of proposing new and energy efficient mass transport across the Metropolitan area and the nearby suburbs. Following adoption of best practices, TREK to formulate an initial financial structure for the procurement and operation of these transport means. Special focus will be given to rail type transportation systems, to be deployed adjacent to existing and under development infrustructure (eg metro). Finally, TREK to seek for potential sources of financing of this initiative and to assess various types of funds-blending.
