TREK to revolutionize the energy landscape of Athens!

TREK Development to announce its participation to a transformative and important initiative for the City of Athens. The Athens Wave project (“Accelerating the Energy Efficient and Sustainable Renovation of the Public Building Stock in the City of Athens”) focuses on retrofitting and upgrading the stock of public sector buildings in Athens as a dedicated effort towards a more sustainable future along the commitments undertaken by Greece under the European Green Deal context. TREK’s key role in the project is to create a tidal shift of energy efficiency interventions in and around the city of Athens.

TREK, with over a quarter-century of expertise in visualizing, coordinating and implementing EU-funded projects and with a vast previous experience in project development support especially related to ELENA (European Local ENergy Assistance) Facility, will assist Athens Anaplassis S.A. in the implementation of Athens_Wave. Athens Anaplassis S.A. is a public entity which coordinates, designs, plans and implements regeneration, revival and promotional activities on the historic center of Athens and its wider region. Under the Athens_Wave project, the two partners will shape a strong framework for developing and promoting energy investment pipelines, fostering sustainability and replication strategies, enhancing visibility, and driving crucial engagement activities, ultimately advancing the project’s goals and its potential as a model for future expansion.

The main objectives include:

1.     Maturity Acceleration: Athens_Wave sets out to fast-track energy efficiency interventions to achieve critical mass for private financing and Energy Performance Contracting.

2.     Replicability: The project seeks to serve as a model for other municipal, regional, and central government entities at both national and EU levels, encouraging the bundling of public infrastructure assets and building stock for energy retrofit through mostly energy performance contracting.

3.     Sustainability: Investments under Athens_Wave contribute significantly to energy efficiency, sustainability, and the reduction of energy consumption and emissions, aligning with local, national, and European targets, as Athens is one of the 100 cities participating in the EU Mission for Climate Neutral and Smart Cities by 2030.

4.     Improved Comfort and Health: The project places a strong emphasis on enhancing indoor comfort and health conditions for building occupants and visitors.

Athens_Wave’s expected results throughout its 3-year duration include:

a)  Investments in Sustainable Energy: The project will trigger 14,6 MEUR in investments that boost sustainable energy use.

b)  Primary Energy Savings: A substantial reduction of 4,0 GWh/year in primary energy consumption.

c)  GHG Emission Reduction:  An impressive reduction of 3.925 tons of CO2 equivalent per year.

d)  Retrofitting Public Buildings: Upgrading 13 buildings (9 schools and 4 municipal buildings) of total 41.600 m2total surface area.

The project is co-financed by the LIFE Clean Energy Transition (LIFE CET) Programme under the topic “2022-CET-PDA – Project Development Assistance for sustainable energy investments”.
